New member, awards, and World War II story highlight meeting

President Drabek with new member Michael Floyd.
Belle Fourche Lions welcomed a new member during our late November meeting on the 22nd.  Lion Michael Floyd joined our ranks.  Lion Floyd has attended a few previous meetings as a guest, and we're delighted to welcome him to Belle Fourche Lions Club.

There were also some awards presented during the gathering at Grap's Burgers and Brews, including a Presidential Service Award to Lion Rick Walton.  He and Lion Robert Schnaible were also recipients of perfect attendance awards, and Lion Osloond was recognized with a 10-Year pin.  You'll find photos of those presentations, along with others, in our Lions Gallery.

Members were reminded of the forthcoming vision screening slated for Tuesday, December 13th at the Middle School and South Park Elementary.  We'll have additional updated information at our scheduled meeting on Thursday, December 8th.

Additional details of this meeting can be found in the Minutes Tab above.

Lion Larry Miller presented the program about a World War II Marine killed at the Battle of Tarawa in the Pacific, and whose remains were not recovered until last year.

The Marine was Sergeant Fae Moore, whose parents ranched on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation not far from Wounded Knee, South Dakota.  His home was listed as Pine Ridge when he enlisted in the Corps in the summer of 1941, several months before the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor.

Sergeant Fae V. Moore, USMC
After boot camp in San Diego, Moore shipped out to American Samoa in the Pacific with the 2nd Marine Division.  While providing security for Pago Pago and the surrounding region, they also trained for amphibious assaults.  They put that training to use with the assault on the Solomon Islands and the battle at Guadalcanal in late 1942.

After that bloody battle, they proceeded to Wellington, New Zealand – again providing security for that region of the Pacific and continuing preparation for yet another major event.

That came on November 20,1943, when more than 10,000 U.S. personnel were involved in the massive invasion of Japanese-held Tarawa atoll in the Gilbert Islands.  After a fierce 76-hour battle – and the loss of more than 6,000 lives – Allied forces defeated the Japanese and took control of the strategic airfield on the island.

Sergeant Moore was killed during the initial landing, along with more than 1,000 other U.S. Marines.  Unfortunately, the circumstances of war and time resulted in about half of the hastily-buried dead Marines never being found.  It was not until last summer that Fae Moore's remains were located on Tarawa by an organization called History Flight.  They were sent to Hawaii for identification.  After DNA confirmation of his identity by the Department of Defense, Moore's remains were returned to the continental United States -- 73 years after his death.

Moore's mother, Mary Moore of Chadron, Nebraska, went to her own grave in 1958, never to see her son — or his remains — return home for burial. Although too late for her, the discovery, identification, and repatriation of her Marine son has finally offered a bit of closure to Moore family.  Moore's siblings and his father have also since died.  Remaining descendants knew little about him, but about 50 of them recently joined together in celebrating his life and service to our country.

Lions members and others are invited to read more about the remarkable recovery of the remains of Sergeant Fae Moore and his Return to Beaver Valley.

Please note: the next Belle Fourche Lions meeting will be a short business meeting at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, December 8 at Grap's.

They went like hotcakes......and they were!

Lions Pancake Breakfast raises $1,655 in sales
Thanks to $860 in ticket sales at the door last Sunday morning (3/13/16), the Belle Fourche Lions Club raised some $1,655 during its annual Pancake Breakfast at the Moose Lodge.

"The weather was really nice, and we didn't get the 'after church' crowd like we normally do," said event chairman Lion Ron Ensz, but it was still "about $100 better than we did last year."

The breakfast always attracts a pretty large group of hungry citizens, and it's a very important tool for the Lions Club.  After expenses for the event are paid, the net proceeds help Belle Fourche Lions in a wide range of community projects ranging from youth scholarships and eyeglasses for needy citizens to lending support to a "Christmas Family" and construction of numerous shelters for city parks.

That's long-time "Advisor" and pancake chef Lion Bob Schnaible pictured above.  We've posted a few other pancake breakfast pictures in our Lions Gallery (with thanks to Lions Joyce Drabek and Ron Ensz for sharing photos).

Thanks to all the Lions who turned out to work at this important event!

Awards and diabetes program highlight November 10th meeting

It was an evening with many awards last night (11/10/15 as the Belle Fourche Lions Club recognized several members for their recruitment efforts, longevity and perfect attendance.

And the club itself earned two significant awards, which will be displayed on the club flag.  They were the Service Challenge Award for two of the challenges and the 2014-2015 Year Round Growth Award.

Lion Rick Walton was presented the Excellence Pin for bringing in three new members.  And the two gents shown in this photo were also honored.  Lion Bob Schnaible (left) was recognized for 40 years of service, while Lion Lee Voyles (right) was honored for 35 years of service as a member of Lions.

Congratulations, and well done!

These are members who were honored for Perfect Attendance during the past year.  Shown left-to-right (seated):  Robert Drabek, Joyce Drabek, Ron Ensz and Rich Drabek; Honorees standing are: Chuck Livingston, Rick Walton, Brian Kline, Del Neumeister, Melodey Zupan, and Frank Walton. (Note:  You can get a close-up look at this photo -- and others -- in our Lions Gallery)

We were delighted to have the following guests from Newell with us: Lions Linda Vollmer, Neil Vollmer, Carol McCarthy, and Elaine Hewson.  Also, Lion Rick Walton introduced Rocky McGinnis, a potential new member.

It was announced that volunteers are still needed for the Vision Screening at South Park Elementary School this Thursday (11/12/15).  Lion Zupan reported that she's purchased of $100 in hats and gloves for the screening.

The club voted to submit an application to the Greater Belle Fourche Foundation for a grant to help build a shelter at the Recreation Center.

Lion Joyce Drabek reminded members to put January 9th on their calendars -- that's the date for the Wellness Fair at the Rec Center.

And  Lion Voyles encouraged members to pick up their raffle tickets to support the work of the South Dakota Lions Foundation.  They're $5 each, $20 for five, or $25 for ten tickets ( best deal!).

Lion Linda Vollmer from Newell presented an excellent program on diabetes.  The disease seems to be growing most rapidly among children -- but it's a disease that affects all ages.  Over 32 million people have diabetes, and it is #7 on the list of causes of death.

To learn more about Lion Vollmer's presentation -- and other meeting highlights -- we encourage you to read through the Minutes of the meeting.  They're always just a "click" away from the Minutes tab at the top of this page.

Our next Lions meeting will be Tuesday, November 24th.

Cubs assist Lions for successful Pancake Breakfast!

Lion John Cooper assists some early patrons during the annual Lions Pancake Breakfast
Cub Scouts from Belle Fourche Pack 19 assisted members of the Lions Club for another successful Pancake Breakfast at the Moose Lodge on Sunday, March 27, 2014.

"The work of the Cub Scouts in busing tables and assisting our Lions members was very helpful.  We're pleased with the way things turned out," said Pancake Breakfast Co-Chairman Ron Ensz.

"Unofficially, we had gross sales of around $2,000 with $1,200 in advance ticket sales.  I would estimate that we fed around 250 people."

The breakfast is an annual affair for Lions, helping to support their many community activities, ranging from Sight and Sound projects that aid persons with vision and hearing problems to youth scholarships, and helping families at  Christmas time.

"While we engage in other fundraising activities, this is probably our best-known and most popular one," said Ensz. "I'd estimate that we served about 50 people every hour."

About a dozen Lions members worked the event.  Co-Chairman are Lions Robert Schnaible and Ron Ensz.

The 2014 breakfast was a bit different, since Lions were joined by a group of Cub Scouts from Belle Fourche Pack 19.  Cubmaster Allan Schreir had approached Lions about having Cub Scouts assisting Lions by busing tables and providing other assistance.

It was a good fit, giving Lions some help -- but also providing some good mentoring and giving the youngsters a chance to learn the value of public service, something the Lions know about!

For a few snapshots of the event and our Cub assistants, visit our Belle Fourche Lions Gallery! Thanks to Ron Ensz for providing several of these photographs.

New officers and directors tapped during a busy Lions night

Marcie Urban provided some rather sobering  statistics
regarding obesity in our society -- including Belle Fourche!
It was a busy night for the Belle Fourche Lions Club last night (4/11/13) as members gathered for their first April meeting.

Marcie Urban from the Belle Fourche Area Community Center (BFACC) presented a program on the Healthify Family Workshop, which is scheduled for Sunday, May 5, from 4:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m at BFACC.

After sharing some rather startling statistics about obesity in our society, she provided details about Healthify, which will offer some great ways for families and individuals to "healthify" their lives through a variety of techniques ranging from learning about portion distortion to ways to get families moving!  She underscored that there are no diets involved in the program -- and no hard-to-remember and hard-to-do workouts.

"Just lots of small ways to 'healthify' our lives," she said.   The event is a preliminary to the walking classes that are scheduled for May 7, 9, 14, 16, 21 and 23 from 6:00 to 6:30 p.m.  Registrations are due by Monday, April 29.

Entry fee for the event is $1.00 per person

Lions club agreed to donate $218 to the BFACC to support "Healthify" in an effort to get more kids involved in the program.

Dallas Connor from the Post Prom Committee appeared before the group to request support for the Post Prom event.  Members agreed to donate $50.

Lion president Rick Bartels (left) recognizes long-time
member John Cooper for his work in promoting Lions
Another positive moment of the evening came when Lion John Cooper was awarded a "Key" pin for his good work in"opening the door to at least two individuals" to Lionism during the past year.

Several vacancies on the Lions Board were filled last night.  They included:  Lion Rick Walton as 3rd Vice President; Lion Rich Drabek as Treasurer; Lions Darren Messner and Robert Schnaible as 1st Year Directors; Lions Swede Wennberg and Chuck Livingston as 2nd Year Directors; and Lion John Cooper as Tail Twister.  Lions Rik Bartels continues as president of the club, and Del Neumeister remains as Treasurer.  Thanks to them all for their willingness to continue in positions of leadership for Belle Fourche Lions Club!

You'll find the full slate of current Belle Fourche Lions Club Directors under the Officers/Directors tab at the top of this page.  Too, you can see full versions of these and other photographs of our many projects and activities in our Lions Gallery.
